Testimonials

Hear from our Governors

I enjoy the opportunity to continue my involvement in schools despite moving on from teaching. Governance needs a range of skills and its difficult to get the opportunity to develop that skill set. Being a governance volunteer means I get to meet our pupils and staff, NEAT colleagues, advisors and a range of other stakeholders, strategically questioning and observing. By doing this we drive continued improvement for our young people. Developing these skills has helped further my career and is extremely rewarding. As a parent, experiencing primary education in this way has helped me better understand what my children are doing, how they are progressing and what I can do to support them.

– Alex, Walkergate Governor

I became a governance volunteer to have the opportunity to make a difference, not only for the children in school now, but for children in years to come. I am in a position to be well placed to understand staff views across school and how decisions being discussed could affect staff. The role of the staff governor offers me an opportunity to make a real contribution to the strategic management of the school, providing an interesting and rewarding dimension to my role.

– Rachael, Central Walker Staff Governor

I have learnt so much about how a school is run day-to-day and it is wonderful to see firsthand how much commitment and effort the teachers put in to ensuring the best for the children at St. Hild’s. I have met so many wonderful people and the young people I have spoken to within the school are articulate, intelligent and inquisitive.

– Ashleigh, St Hild’s Governor

I find it so inspiring to see what young people achieve when they believe in themselves. I love seeing how we as LGC members can support the school to nurture students to achieve excellence.Being a governor makes me feel inspired, proud and determined.

– Susan, Benfield Governor

Being a governance volunteer has allowed me to observe how the strategic decisions are taken and how those have an impact on students’ experience and learning. Having this perspective, I am now better informed when I need to make decisions.

– Hamdi, Benfield Governor

I love being part of the team working to make Central Walker Primary School a place of safety for learning where aspirations can be nurtured and children thrive. It is a great privilege to work alongside school leaders to ensure the children are given the best possible education, which is set in the framework of the Christian vision and values of a church school.

– Claire, Central Walker Governor

The benefits of being a governor far outweigh the time commitment to fulfil the role. I love to hear of the success and achievement of children in reaching their full potential, as well as developing the skills that they will need for their future career and, ultimately, their life.

– Nicola, St Hild’s Governor

I have lived in the East End of the city all of my life and I find that being a school governor is a really enjoyable and fulfilling way of being involved in the local community and helping to support the education and future prospects of the young people in the area.

– Peter, West Walker Governor

What support will I get?

Do I need experience in education?

You don’t need experience in education to be a school governor. For each of our schools we need a team of individuals with a wide range of different experiences, knowledge and skill sets.

How much time does it take?

You can expect to spend between 12-15 hours per month in your governance role. This includes attending meetings, school visits and training, writing reports and reading documentation.

When do the meetings take place?

Meetings take place in-person at the school (with hybrid/online options available).

Depending on the school, the start times range from 3:45pm to 5pm and meetings last 2 hours.

There are on average 6 meetings per year (roughly one per half term).

When do school visits take place?

As a governor, you will visit school during the school day at least once per term. You will arrange this date with other governors and school leaders for a mutually convenient time.

Will I receive training?

Once appointed, you will receive an onboarding and induction programme. You will meet with the Clerk of the Local Governing Committee (LGC) for an introductory onboarding meeting to familiarise you with key information and get you logged into the relevant systems. You will receive a list of both statutory and optional training which will teach you lots about your new role.

You will also receive further support from your Chair and the other members of the LGC.

Will I get help with meetings and documents?

During your onboarding meeting, the clerk will explain some of the key documents, and provide you with some useful tips for accessing meetings and documents. The Governance Support Team and Chair will be there for ongoing support with meetings and documents throughout your time as a governor.

Can I claim expenses?

You are entitled to claim reasonable expenses, such as travel and childcare costs.

Where do I find out more?

You can access lots of information on the NEAT website, school websites or recruitment pack.
